Redstar Smarts News Football Club held their annual presentation evening at the Imperial Pub in Cleethorpes and then moved onto Cleethorpes to party the night away. Awards on the night went to Nick Woods for managers player of the year, Ross Atmore for players player of the year, Danny Mccann for goal of the season and Gary Cox for leading scorer with 25 goals even though he did not bother to turn up so his trophy was melted down the ungreatful ****! Photos from the night are now online.
Team Redstar finished the season on a high when they entertained Crows Nest 2nds FC. Redstar pulled names out of a hat to determine their position on the pitch and as if the script was already written, goalkeeper Marco Sotgiu drew the famous number 9 shirt and scored his 1st ever goal in English football! Stand in keeper John Conroy found out how difficult it was to play in between the sticks when he fumbled a tame shot into his own net to give Crows the 1st goal of the game but then redeemed himself to pull off a full length dive for a corner. 10 minutes later and it was Sotgiu who set the ground alight with a goal no 1 ever thought they would see. Good work by Dave Duff saw him cross for Soggy to slide in unmarked at the back post to the delight of his teammates. By the time the referee John love blew the halftime whistle, Redstar were 3 - 1 to the good with 2 quick fire goals from Dave Maggs. Straight after the restart, Maggs completed his hattrick. Crows immediatly pulled another goal back. Next on the scoresheet was John Conroy with a neat finish, then Ian Blackmore got in on the act after Maggs set him up. Crows grabbed another through a dodgy penalty but the best was yet to come when Redstar got a corner with 10 minutes to go. Luke Borrill, normally on the wing, took his place in goal for the 2nd half but came up for the set piece and buried a header into the net. Crows got yet another before Maggs fot his 4th of the match after a goalmouth scramble. If it was'nt for the Crow's linesman then Redstar would've been in double figures with Duff the main culprit up top. Snowy Edwards, playing his last game for the club, was immense at teh back but his partner in crime striker Matty Conroy beat him to the Man of the Match award with an astonishing display of cool calm collectiveness.
